The Peterson Center on Healthcare is a non-profit organization dedicated to making higher quality, more affordable healthcare a reality for all Americans. The organization is working to transform U.S. healthcare into a high-performance system by finding innovative solutions that improve quality and lower costs, and accelerating their adoption on a national scale. Established by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the Center collaborates with stakeholders across the healthcare system and engages in grant-making, partnerships, and research.

The Position

The Center is looking for a JavaScript developer responsible for building responsive, interactive, reactive user interfaces as it builds out a technology-enabled service to transform the workflows of primary care practices. The Engineer's primary focus will be development of the front end of our web application product. The successful candidate will drive and innovate user interface evolution in our organization, but will also be a strong collaborator who can work well with team members from a variety of backgrounds including healthcare improvement, administration, project management, data analysis, design, and more. Reports to the Director of Product Development. This is a full-time position located in New York, N.Y.

The Front End Engineer will be part of a development team building products that will positively impact the quality of care delivered to millions of patients, improve the quality of life for thousands of physicians, and significantly reduce the cost burden of U.S. healthcare. The Center is taking a model of high-performance primary care transformation identified through our work with Stanford University’s Clinical Excellence Research Center and advancing it in several primary care practices through an integrated product and service effort.

The main responsibilities of the job include:

  • Designing, building, and maintaining readable, reusable, and reliable JavaScript, HTML, CSS code
  • Working with Product and Design to create a delightful experience for users
  • Coordinating with Service, Data and Distribution team leaders to advance the front end of the product in a way that holistically advances the Center’s work and mission

Some initial projects may include:

  • Creating a single page application that makes presentation of an evidence-based curriculum seamless for primary care practice professionals
  • Working with our design team to create dynamic web-enabled forms to assist practices in changing their workflows and maintaining these changes
  • Developing data visualizations showing personalized feedback to healthcare professionals based on their practice goals and showing the impact of their actions

The Person

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Expert level understanding of front end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3, with experience using some of the leading JS frameworks such as React or Angular
  • Experience building data visualizations in JavaScript, React or D3.JS
  • Understanding of the disciplines of Test Driven Development and Refactoring
  • Significant experience working on a software team with a production application
  • Solid understanding of functional and object-oriented programming
  • Experience working with Ruby on Rails software
  • Experience working with Capybara, Jenkins, Travis or other automated web acceptance test frameworks
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools (e.g. Git)
  • A robust portfolio of user interfaces that show versatility
  • Great collaborative chemistry with UI/UX design team members in past work
  • Example projects

Qualifications:

  • 2–3 years of front end engineering experience, ideally at early stage technology companies
  • Bachelors degree in computer science or another quantitative field (e.g. engineering, mathematics, physics) preferred
  • Passion for improving healthcare system and working within a mission-driven culture
