About The Peterson Center on Healthcare

U.S. Healthcare is expensive and unsustainable.

Healthcare in the United States costs far too much compared to other nations and our health outcomes are no better.

The Peterson Center on Healthcare identifies and promotes promising solutions to improve healthcare affordability.

Healthcare spending is 18% of the U.S. economy—$4.3 trillion—and keeps rising. Despite this, the United States consistently has lower life expectancy, a higher maternal mortality rate and has seen declining health outcomes since the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to other wealthy countries. This leaves people with unnecessary, ineffective, or even harmful care.

The amount that America overspends on healthcare means less for everything else. It prevents investment in other critical priorities such as education, energy, housing, and infrastructure.

America’s healthcare system is capable of providing higher quality care at a lower cost. The Center is dedicated to making efficient, affordable, and effective healthcare a reality for all Americans.

Our Approach

Making higher-quality, more affordable healthcare a reality for all Americans.

The Peterson Center on Healthcare was established by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation to make higher-quality, more affordable healthcare a reality for all Americans.

The Center collaborates with stakeholders across healthcare, invests in strategic grantmaking, embraces innovative partnerships, and supports needed research. Its work strengthens America’s health data infrastructure, informs and improves healthcare purchasing, and fosters innovative solutions that reduce costs and make care more affordable, efficient, and effective.

Understanding what works—and identifying and scaling high-value solutions—is at the core of our approach.
