Center Responds to RFI on Hospital Price Transparency
Last Updated July 22, 2025
In July 2025, the Center responded to a Request for Information (RFI) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on improving hospitals’ accuracy in compiling and publishing pricing data and their compliance with CMS’s Hospital Price Transparency rules. In our response, we noted examples of inaccuracies in current hospital data files and emphasized the importance of clarifying standards of accuracy and compliance so that hospital prices are more accessible and useful for patients, employers, and policymakers.
We stressed that hospital pricing data requires additional context for those users and urged CMS to consider further data requirements, such as:
- The volumes of services for which prices are reported;
- CMS quality metrics and the prices Medicare pays for the reported services; and
- Special hospital designations that provide additional insights for patients and purchasers into the financial health of hospitals charging the listed prices.
This RFI represents an important step toward improving the potential of market competition and regulatory guardrails to enhance the quality of patient care and reduce healthcare spending.
