A recent KFF analysis found that average out-of-pocket costs for an emergency visit exceed some household’s liquid assets, putting them at risk for medical debt from a single trip to the emergency department. Our analysis uses data from the Merative MarketScan Commercial Database, which captures claims from privately insured individuals with large employer health plans, to examine trends in emergency department facility fees.
